Brett Klika is a personal trainer, international speaker, educator, author, and motivator on topics in sports performance, fitness, and behavior change. In his 14 year career, Brett has served as a performance coach for Olympians at the Olympic Training Center in San Diego as well as thousands of youth, collegiate, and high-profile professional athletes. He is currently the Director of Athletic programs and personal training at Todd Durkin’s Fitness Quest 10 in San Diego. These programs see over 500 youth, collegiate and professional athletes every year, in addition to thousands of personal training clients.

Brett presents internationally in the fitness industry and is a speaker for Johnson & Johnson’s Corporate Athlete® program and has been featured in a variety of publications, including the Wall Street Journal for his work with youth, adults, and athletes. He is a contributing author for the National Academy of Sports Medicine’s personal training and sports performance academic textbooks in addition to creating over 15 educational DVD’s on topics in fitness and wellness. Brett has been a sports performance consultant for Under Armour and is a contributing expert to the Gatorade online forum, The Gatorade Performance Center. The International Dance and Exercise Association (IDEA) has named Brett a top 3 finalist for the 2011 Personal Trainer of the Year award. Aside from working with athletes, Brett has a client list of over 100 executives, moms, dads, and every day people that he coaches weekly on how to achieve a balance of health, wellness, and performance in their lives.

Description: The pressure is on for young athletes to perform in organized athletics. This pressure unfortunately has created a disconnect between proper youth physical development and sports performance.  Youngsters are getting injured and experiencing athletic burnout at astoundingly early ages, and many stop physical activity all together. This intensive hands-on workshop examines the problems associated with early competition and provides programming strategies to prevent injury, improve performance, and get kids smiling again!  The S.T.A.R.S. method is a longitudinal development model developed by Fitness Quest 10 (Todd Durkin’s facility) to address the developmental needs over time for youth.  This program has helped thousands of youngsters, regardless of age or innate athleticism, improve their physical ability and prevent injury.  Additionally, strategies to create, market, and administrate youth programs will be demonstrated.  This workshop is a must for coaches, trainers, or parents that work with young athletes and want to see them grow into happy, healthy, pain-free adults. 

The S.T.A.R.S practical and lecture based workshop will teach you:

  • How to understand the developmental model of the S.T.A.R.S. program
  • Assess the developmental needs of youth and address them with appropriate modalities
  • Design a longitudinal developmental program for long term skill acquisition and development
  • Identify the key components of designing an effective youth athletic program
  • Demonstrate fun, effective, and engaging drills associated with youth athletic programs

Is Your Functional Training Functional? No Pain, Big Gains  (Lecture and Workout) “Functional training” has become a buzzword in the fitness industry.  There are various interpretations, however, as to what functional training truly is.  Some current popular methodologies may not only be ineffective, they may be dangerous!  This workshop is designed to help trainers further their understanding of what they are truly trying to accomplish with their clients, both physically and mentally, in order to create happy, healthy, raving fans.   A review of biomechanics, physiology, and current research in fat loss, injury prevention, and effective program design will possibly re-shape the way trainers think about their training!

No Pain, Big Gains! (Workout) Our goal is trainers is to produce happy, healthy, pain-free clients. Regardless of the demographic a trainer works with, chronic pain maladies in the feet, knees, lower back, shoulder, and neck are common.  Whether these are due to overuse, or underuse, there are some basic methodologies every trainer can utilize with their clients to prevent and alleviate these problems.  This hands-on workshop designed as the practical for “Is Your “Functional Training” Functional?” aims to educate trainers as to the 5 most common causes of many chronic pain issues with their clientele.  This knowledge is then applied with over 15 specific, basic modalities that the trainer can implement with their clients for pre-hab, warm-up, and workout!

Small Groups for Big Profits (Lecture) As small group personal training grows in popularity, there are opportunities for personal trainers and businesses in addition to the client.  Whether you’re a solopeneur or a large business owner,  it’s important for to create systems for marketing, scheduling, facility use, employee hiring, accounts receivable, and a variety of other operational factors.  Creating effective systems and understanding this clientele can be the limiting factor in the success of small group personal training for any fitness business.  The lecture portion of this workshop discusses effective means by which to address these operational concerns and specific examples of how to address them.     

Small Groups, BIG Results (Workout) For personal trainers, it’s important to understand the differences in programming necessary for facilitating individual success in the small group environment.  This workshop discusses and demonstrates strategies for effective small group program design as well as how to manage the small group dynamic.  Learn how to easily and effectively assess and modify programs for individuals within a group while maintaining an engaging group cohesiveness.  Go back to work with over 10 new mini-circuits that can be used with almost any group to burn calories, create energy, and facilitate success for everyone involved. 

The Weekend Warrior: Fast and Injury- Free After 40 Recreational adult league sports are a great way for participants to exercise, compete, and de-stress.  The level of intensity required to compete, paired with the low level of physical preparation most weekend warriors exhibit however, is an injury cocktail! Learn the 10 essential strength, flexibility, balance, and movement drills to prevent injury and improve performance for this population.  Grow your client base immensely by learning how to communicate, provide programs, and market to this demographic.  In addition, learn how to develop relationships with adult leagues and clubs to increase your weekend warrior client base!
